I get asked lots of questions about the gig economy, so today I want to share the pros and cons and how to get started.

But first, here’s a little background:

We started doing PUD in 2016 with 5-6 drivers running a morning and evening route. Around 2021, we started using gig workers. As our drivers slowly transitioned out, we increased our usage of gig PUDs.

How It Works:

  • Sign up for one of the POS systems in our industry that offer integration with DoorDash, Uber, PostMates, etc.
  • Link or embed the POS web order link/button in your website or use their custom-branded app for your store.
  • When the client places an order through the POS, it dispatches it to the delivery platform for you.
  • A driver accepts the gig and completes the delivery.

Pros and Cons of the Gig Economy

Pros:

  • Low to no cost for your business
  • Shorter set-up time than hiring and training new drivers
  • More scalability in less time and with less effort
  • More client control
  • Allows for on-demand PUD
  • Easily ban drivers who are not a good fit for your business
  • Add a good driver to your preferred network (your orders will go to them before other drivers in the network)
  • Loss or damaged orders are covered by the delivery platform’s insurance

Cons:

  • Less control over the driver’s customer service
  • No branded vehicles
  • Drivers sometimes have limited training
  • Potential language barriers due to low barrier of entry
  • Confusion with drivers who aren’t familiar with gig laundry PUD methods
  • Delays if no driver accepts the job
  • Low amount of loyalty or allegiance to make sure pickup or delivery is done to the client's satisfaction
  • A limited number of drivers in less dense areas

The pros of using gig workers can outweigh the cons depending on your area and business model. But as always, consider the needs of your business and customers before making the switch.

That's all I got for today.
